Edward Cullen is the man; it’s Jacob that you need to worry about. So here’s the thing…
women authors. Admittedly, most of my favorite authors have vaginas. I don’t really care to analyze why that is, so let’s just take it and leave it - shall we?I do, however, pride myself on the fact (amongst things like my love for the Patriots pre-Tom Brady, my immense dislike of Britney Spears pre-Chris Crocker and my general apathy towards all things Twilight) that I am one of the only girls out there that does not like Jane Austen. Now apparently when you’re an educated American woman, that’s like saying you like to club baby seals — and though I do also appreciate a good clubbing, that’s beside the point.Anyway, I just finished reading Persuasion and, much as I anticipated, I left feeling bored, tired, and just a little gassy. I just don’t get it. I’ve heard all the arguments and I’ll hear them all again if you feel so inclined as to scream them at me - but budge I will not.I’m not saying the woman was evil (though her cult-like following IS a little disturbing) but her characters are fake and unrealistic, her plot lines so similar it’s unnerving, and her men — oh dear, let’s not even get started on the penis envy. The reason I feel this is important to bring up and hash out is because hopefully at some point I will refer to myself when I talk about “women authors.” Now maybe I’ll never have a cult-like following (though I’ve designed an adorable little initiation tattoo…) but I do want to at least one time have my name announced incorrectly at a book signing that is made up of only my extended family, close friends and that funny looking kid who thought I was Judy Blume.Much to my chagrin (what an excellent word), she IS considered one of “The Greats” [seeing as she’s been included in Gordon’s ENG143A - which is the highest bestowed honor, of course]. But honestly, what is the world coming to when even my fictional men turn out to be a choice between Captain Wentworth and Edward Cullen? Now I see why so many women authors turn out to be lesbians.Too much?
